National Apprenticeship Week: Apprenticeship Levy – How to Get Your Money Back!
To celebrate National Apprenticeship Week, East London Business Alliance in collaboration with the National Apprenticeship Service, recently held an employer breakfast event entitled ‘Apprenticeship Levy – How to Get Your Money Back!’
Hosted in Morgan Stanley’s brand new hospitality and conference suite, located at their 25 Cabot Square site, the event aimed to provide ELBA corporate partners with information on the approaching April 2017 Levy, provisions available and how ELBA can help either create new apprenticeship schemes or contribute by sourcing local people for opportunities.
Our key note speakers included: Neil Catchick, from education provider, BPP. BPP conducted extensive work on the Levy and provided a full and simplified overview of all things Levy. Mandy Maskell from ELBA corporate partner T. Rowe Price, provided a presentation from an employer’s perspective of successfully completing a pilot. Both apprentices from T. Rowe Price’s first year pilot, Syed Hussain and Aisha Kareem (Newham Candidates) attended and presented. Shernade Benn from ELBA’s Employment Works team commented “It was vital for me to include at least two candidates who had benefited from our hard work, I worked personally with T Rowe Price to set up their pilot apprenticeship scheme and it is so gratifying to see them presenting at an event now having secured full time work within the business”. Finally, Carlos Cubillo-Barsi from Newham College London presented on how a local college provider is preparing for the Levy by offering resources such as tailor-made frameworks (soon to be standards) and information on how they can help local employers.
ELBA corporate partner representatives from over 50 companies attended including: Morgan Stanley, Barclays, Aviva Investors, British Land and Freshfields, to name just a few.
Shernade Benn, who organised the event, said “I was over the moon that the event was well attended, which generated some great conversations for future work in this area. ELBA’s Employment Works team are currently preparing for the roll-out of the Levy and will ensure we are assisting our corporate partner by sourcing local talent and more. The hard work has just begun, however we’ve got the appetite from our corporate partner, so watch this space for more apprentice successes”.
