Stock Exchange visit helps break the stereotype

One of the most important financial institutions in the country provided inspiration for a group of young people. As part of the Career Insight Visits programme, some 15 pupils from Lister Community School spent the day at London Stock Exchange to find out the crucial role it plays and the varying job opportunities and roles available.
The Year 8 students, along with teachers and members of the ELBA team, were given an introduction to the Stock Exchange by volunteers. The teenagers were told about the varying career routes into the Stock Exchange before taking part in a banking game. They were also taught about the value of networking and how it can improve career prospects and opportunities.
After lunch, the students worked on presentations along with volunteers before delivering them to the rest of the group. Shadique Gani, project manager at ELBA, said:

“Career Insight Visits do exactly what they say on the tin. It’s all about giving students an insight into life in the City and Canary Wharf. This was a great chance for these young people to talk to volunteers and seasoned professionals who work within the City to find out their upbringing as well as their route to where they are. Did they go to university? Did they do an apprenticeship? Did they go straight to work?”

A volunteer on the day said:
“There is a stereotype that you have to look a certain way or go to Oxford or Cambridge in order to get a job in the City, which isn’t true. The visit is a good opportunity to break down the stereotypes that exist relating to careers in the City.”
ELBA has since continued to work with the London Stock Exchange and arranged another visit for later on in the year to continue providing insights to young people across East London.
