International Women’s Day – then and now

Written by Anya Rudolphy, Community Development Project Manager

8 March 2023 we come together to celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD). The earliest recorded version of something like IWD was in the USA in 1909, titled National Women’s Day. The United Nations (UN) first recognised IWD as an international celebration in 1975.

Most years, IWD has two themes: one set out on the IWD website and one by the UN. This year, the IWD website campaign focused on #EmbraceEquity to highlight that people start from different places, so true inclusion and belonging require equitable action.

UN’s 2023 theme is #DigitALL, outlining the need for women and girls to be included in creative solutions and innovation in technology. The UN website reminds us that a lack of inclusion, by contrast, comes with massive costs.
