International Women’s Day – State Street
To celebrate International Women’s Day on Tuesday 8th March, the London Legacy Development Corporation held an event to introduce young girls to more sporting opportunities in their boroughs and to celebrate women in sport from around the globe. As with some other notable past sporting events held at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, to deliver such a fantastic day a group of enthusiastic volunteers were needed. And our corporate partner State Street delivered!
Volunteers from State Street spent the day at the Copper Box Arena helping to run different sport sessions for primary and secondary school aged girls. Over 400 students from over 25 east London schools attended the event and were joined by a host of elite female athletes to help inspire the next generation of sporting champions, including Abi Chamberlain, the former England Rugby 7’s Captain and Perri Shakes-Drayton, a Team GB hurdler. The young women spent the day playing a mix of less well known sports such as boccia and new age curling as well as football, volleyball and netball.
A fun day was had by all, with one volunteer from State Street saying:
“It was a great day, it’s good to see these facilities are being used by all in the community. The organisers’ enthusiasm was infectious and they certainly made the event a big success. The students that I met were all very polite, well-mannered and willing to chat, a credit to their schools.”
