Black History Month: Opening doors to careers

Black History Month: Opening doors to careers

Written by Abdale Ali

“I never thought finance/insurance was for people like me.” It’s a sentence we hear too often from talented young Black professionals – bright, ambitious but unsure if there’s a place for them in these sectors. This Black History Month, we set out to change that narrative.

Our beneficiaries attended two powerful insight days with leading financial and insurance institutions, gaining the kind of exposure that can genuinely shift the trajectory of a career.

Breaking down barriers at SMBC

A group of young Black professionals stepped into SMBC, one of Japan’s most prestigious financial institutions. For many, it was their first time inside an investment bank.

What made the day special wasn’t just the office tour or the impressive trading floors – it was the conversations. Participants heard candid career stories from diverse SMBC employees who’d navigated their own journeys through finance. They learned practical skills in CV writing and career planning, networked with professionals who were genuinely invested in their success, and – most importantly – saw themselves reflected in the people they met.

Discovering insurance at BMS

Then, a few weeks later, our beneficiaries explored a different side of career opportunities at BMS’s Insurance Discovery Day. Through hands-on activities like the “Discover Risk Game,” career discussions and speed networking sessions, participants uncovered opportunities in the often-overlooked insurance and reinsurance sector – an industry brimming with possibility but rarely on the radar of young jobseekers.

Why this matters

Here’s the reality: many young Black professionals simply don’t have networks in financial or insurance services. They’re not lacking talent, ambition or capability; they’re lacking access.

These insight days gave our beneficiaries something no amount of online research can provide – real connections with industry insiders, authentic stories about what it actually takes to succeed, and proof that finance and insurance isn’t a closed door. They met professionals who looked like them, asked the questions they’d been holding back and left with something priceless – confidence!

When you can see it, you can be it. And now, our beneficiaries can see their futures in banking, insurance and beyond. The feedback says it all. Participants left with expanded networks, practical skills, renewed self-belief and – most critically – clarity about their next steps. That’s the power of exposure.

Creating lasting change

Events like these don’t just benefit individuals, they benefit the entire industry. Financial and insurance services need diverse talent, fresh perspectives and innovation. By opening their doors and investing time in the next generation, organisations like SMBC and BMS aren’t just doing good – they’re building a stronger, more inclusive future for finance and insurance.

We’re grateful to SMBC and BMS for their commitment to creating meaningful pathways for young Black talent. This is what partnership looks like. This is how we change the game.

And, to our beneficiaries, keep going. The doors are opening, and you absolutely belong on the other side.
