From classroom to clinic

By Samie John, Project Manager – Education, ELBA

ELBA recently had the pleasure of partnering with dedicated volunteers from Bupa to host a fantastic event as part of our ongoing Futures Week initiatives. The session was designed to bring textbook learning to life, and the impact on the students was immediate and profound.

Students from Sir George Monoux College, currently enrolled in the Health and Society subjects, were given the unique opportunity to step away from their regular curriculum and sit down with experienced industry professionals. Through an engaging and open Q&A session, the students gained firsthand insight into the realities of working in the modern healthcare sector.

The Bupa volunteers generously shared their personal career journeys, highlighting the fact that the road to success is rarely a straight line. Our students arrived well-prepared and eager to learn, posing excellent, professional questions that covered the day-to-day realities of specific roles, emerging trends, and the future of healthcare.

The value of the session was clearly reflected in the students’ feedback. One student mentioned:

“It was incredibly reassuring to hear that career paths aren’t always straightforward. Hearing about the volunteers’ day-to-day roles made everything we learn in class feel much more relevant.”

Multiple students also highlighted how much they appreciated getting direct, practical advice on how to stand out when applying for their first roles in the sector.

Initiatives like this are at the heart of what we do. By connecting students directly with those already succeeding in the field, we are able to bridge the gap between the classroom and the professional world. These interactions provide invaluable context, helping students visualise their own futures and understand the practical steps needed to achieve their career ambitions.

We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to all the Bupa volunteers who took the time to participate. Your stories, advice, and industry insights have left a lasting impact, truly inspiring our next generation of healthcare professionals.
