Employability Day at UBS

 In Community, Education, Employment, News

It was an exciting day when over 60 UBS volunteers supported students from Hackney Community College and East London Advanced Technology Training (ELATT) to get into employment. Through four workshops, the students were trained in a range of skills to help them enter or re-enter the job market. The day-long event took the students through a range of skills by different cohorts of volunteers assisting and challenging the students in a one to one capacity.

A networking workshop was improving students’ confidence to build new contacts for their future employment. This was followed by a mock interview session and CV surgery in which students had a chance to rebuild their CVs with the help of a professional. One of the participating ELATT students said:

“We acquired some very valuable information and advice that I will most definitely be using in the future”

Feedback from volunteers was equally positive, with a UBS volunteer saying:

“The session was very well managed and run with clear and useful guidance both verbally and written. My candidates feedback was very positive and I believe she will interview better as a result of the day.”

The day culminated in a Dragon’s Den where the students got to present a business idea to a panel of volunteers. The students proposed ways in which the technology of a phone app could connect students to opportunities in the business sector and what issues they are facing as they try to enter the job market.

Another UBS volunteer said of the day, and of UBS’ work in the community generally:

A great experience for me personally and I’m grateful that UBS do so much in the local community and make it so easy for us to participate.”
