Staff Spotlight – Sophie Critchlow, Deputy Head of Employment

When did you join ELBA?
I joined in 2020, initially to support the LEAN East programme (London Enterprise Advisor Network) and then joining the Employment team to deliver the Future Fit programme to furloughed employees during COVID. Since then, I have enjoyed leading the Enable communication skills programme, supporting our community partners by providing employability workshops to their beneficiaries.

What is your role and what does it involve?
I am Deputy Head of the Employment team and some of what I do includes managing the programme with 22 Bishopsgate, supporting the STEPS programme, training volunteers, managing materials and liaising with our partners. I also joined the EAGLES team this year – 2025 as Eagles turns 20!! – supporting young people, undergraduates to take their first steps into the corporate world with paid internships.

Three words to describe yourself
Curious, empathetic, reflective.

Tell us one thing that people may not know about you
I love film as it’s a powerful medium for storytelling, for different voices to be seen and heard. This led me to study film in my 20’s and I had a brief stint working at the BBC Writers room and supporting the young cast on children’s sitcom ‘Kerching’ before working with local communities and schools in participatory filmmaking projects in east London.

Tell us the best thing about working for ELBA
The strength, passion and diversity of the ELBA team and being part of bringing about positive change by supporting our communities. Being able to collaborate with colleagues, stakeholders and partners to create bespoke and innovative programmes that support people to not only thrive but to flourish.

Name your favourite place in east London and why
I’m so lucky to have Victoria Park on my doorstep. It’s a vibrant green space and has so much to offer – the greenery, wildlife, play parks, food market, music festivals and sports.

Complete this sentence: ‘The absolute best thing about volunteering is…’
…the opportunity to connect with people/communities while offering support. It’s a partnership where there is a positive impact for everyone taking part.
