Students get a taste of STEM in Aviation with London City Airport

The ExCel Centre was buzzing with over 200 school pupils from 16 schools across East London coming together for London City Airport’s STEM event on Friday 10th of November. There was an exciting range of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths)  ‘tasters’ on the timetable provided by volunteers from the engineering and construction company Bechtel, Air traffic control company NATS, management consulting company Accenture, and London City Airport.

The students explored how these companies use new innovative technologies such as virtual reality to support their work in engineering, construction and aviation. ExCel was the perfect playground for students who were sat various tasks before completing the STEM Business Challenge. “It was great to see the opportunities for us in the future” said students from one school.

The students were challenged to create an idea for an app for London City Airport to maintain and gain more customers. They then had the chance to present their idea to the professional volunteer panel to judge. The challenge was won by students who had arrived via the cable car from Thomas Tallis school who can now look forward to a flight simulation experience at the Emirates as a reward for their ‘Frequent Flier’ app idea. “It was interesting for the students to see what STEM can do for their future.”- a teacher at All Saints School commented.
