‘The start of my career as a surveyor’ via ELBA’s Broadgate Connect project
“Although I have had various jobs in my life, working with Broadgate Estates and all the excellent professionals they house has allowed me to start my career in surveying. This was the start of my life.”
As told by Abdus Saheed Ahmed, of Tower Hamlets:
After leaving college, finding work is always difficult.
I had been searching for an apprenticeship for 5 years. It made me determined to find a job, especially trying to support my family. Jobs ranged from retail to security and eventually lead to construction.
Trying to get the first job is always difficult as every employer looks for experience. I was fortunate enough to be referred to my first job which made it easier, however the few months I was unemployed were difficult, especially dealing with countless rejections but it was important I didn’t give up even though there was increased pressure from family and friends. I worked towards getting my CSCS card so I could work as a labourer in construction as I was doing voluntary work for a small building company in order to gain experience.
My friend was invited to an ELBA event, which I tagged along too. This is how I heard about Broadgate Connect and was introduced to Chantell Brown. The deadline for applications for the position I currently hold was the same day I actually met Chantell. After I had told her about my experience in labouring and the fact that I had an offer from Greenwich University to study construction management, I believe this set me apart from others because of my determination and drive to work in the construction industry.
I started as an apprentice for Broadgate Estates on the 22nd of September 2015, as a Trainee Building surveyor, studying toward a degree in surveying.
I still owe Chantell a box of chocolates for all her support in shortlisting and arranging an interview for me. Chantell’s phone call that Monday morning was to inform me of good and bad news. Bad news being I was not going to go to university full time. The good news being, that I will be working with Broadgate Estates. Chantell will tell you, she heard me screaming to my mum and dad about my new job offer and my overwhelming joy. I was lost for words so all I could do was scream and shout in happiness.
Although I have had various jobs in my life, working with Broadgate Estates and all the excellent professionals they house has allowed me to start my career in surveying. This was the start of my life.
“Broadgate have offered me a once in a lifetime opportunity. Now I am living the dream.”
