Your title, when you joined and what motivated you to join ELBA:
Head of Programmes, BIG Alliance. Joining ELBA in 2017, I saw an opportunity with a place-based organisation, making a hyper-local difference.
Key contributions or focus:
I oversee BIG Alliance’s team volunteering programme, providing opportunities for groups of volunteers to support projects out in the community. Our primary focus is to help communities maintain and protect Islington’s limited green spaces. Only 13% of Islington’s land is green space, the second lowest proportion of any local authority in England. The programme supports a range of amazing community partners, such as adventure playgrounds, schools, parks, community centres and gardens. Alongside this, volunteer teams also have the opportunity to support other projects, such as food banks and community events.
Professional background and perspective:
I previously worked at a social integration charity engaging young people to take social action in their communities. I spent time in Mexico volunteering for my sister’s grassroots charity, Therapies Unite, providing disabled people with access to therapies and equipment.
