The FCA give a little love to RDLAC on Valentine’s Day!

 In Community, News

This Valentine’s day the FCA helped RDLAC (Royal Docks Learning Centre) bring fun celebrations to Newham! RDLAC are a community centre in the borough. The RDLAC promotes diversity by bringing together people from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds. It also supports those who endeavour to make the Royal Docks and Newham area a stronger, healthier and happier place to live for all.

Volunteers from the FCA helped run activities with the elderly and set up a special lunch for all attendees. They also had the added bonus of it being half term for school children across the borough, which meant the event was set to be a great day for all ages – the more the merrier!

What seemed like a quiet community centre from the outside was buzzing with people ahead of the start of the event. Two FCA volunteers welcomed guests as they arrived, offering a warm greeting. Once signed in FCA volunteers were helping prepare a scrumptious lunch for children and the elderly from salads, sandwiches, hot and cold food and tasty treats. Whilst the kitchen was buzzing with people ready to sit and mingle with others, amongst the backdrop of heart shaped decorations across the community café walls, it was a was a lovely atmosphere! Children from neighbouring estates had come along for some arts and crafts, making cards for valentines, cupcake decorating, jewellery making and taking part in playful centre activities including sports in the outdoor area.

The volunteers were enthusiastic and feedback after the day was very positive:

This is our 2nd time visiting the centre. We have got to know the staff there and all of us thoroughly enjoyed the day and felt like we made a real difference. It’s a good way to support the community and we very much look forward to supporting them again later this year.

Thank you to the FCA volunteers who had a great day getting involved in all parts of the daily work of the centre especially on such a jam packed day on Valentines!
