Tackling the Digital Divide
The Digital Divide
The digital divide is another facet of the deep inequalities which run through the social fabric of the UK and is more widespread than many people are aware of. Since the onset of social distancing in the UK, some resemblance of normality and productivity has been possible to maintain only because of the networks of digital technologies and platforms already in place. Our beneficiaries on the Parity Project have of course been affected by this massively, many have struggled to get access to computers, therefore resulting in not being able to engage in countless online opportunities, undergo job searches and remain in touch with peers. As an aspect of deprivation in the UK, digital exclusion cannot be overlooked. The link between poverty and digital exclusion is clear, if you are poor, you have less chance of being online and with the overwhelming support of Nomura, we have been to tackle this divide.
The Impact on the Parity Project
The Parity Project’s beneficiaries have been fortunate to receive computer desktops and accessories donated by Nomura to help them overcome the digital divide. The donation, which included mice, keyboards, headsets and webcams, has been life-changing for our beneficiaries. With improved digital access, our beneficiaries can now effectively participate in virtual employability sessions, apply and interview for jobs and, for those in employment, increase their efficiency as they work from home.
A Nomura spokesperson said:
“At Nomura, we are passionate about creating opportunities for a sustainable future, using our skills, expertise and experience to make a lasting difference to young people in our local communities. We know that the impact of the digital divide has been exacerbated as a consequence of the coronavirus pandemic, with many struggling to access educational and employment opportunities due to a lack of access to laptops and computers. We were therefore delighted to donate 20 fully equipped computer systems to ELBA to help support Parity Project beneficiaries and we hope this donation will help inspire the beneficiaries to reach their full potential.”
Beneficiary testimonies:
“Having a computer has changed everything, I’ve become used to doing everything on my iPhone and that hasn’t always been the most practical way to complete tasks but at least now I don’t need to stress about whether I will be able to view documents properly on my iPhone”
– Kunle Ekundayo
“It is compact and doesn’t take up too much space at all. I’m happy I also received some equipment with it, so I honestly don’t have to do anything, thank you! I am still getting used to the computer, but at first instance, it does everything I need it to do, it’s very much appreciated.”
– Nze
“The desktop works very nicely. It is quick, efficient, and fast enough to perform necessary tasks. I want to thank you for the opportunity to receive a desktop. The webcam has come in handy in many situations so far.”
