STEPS programme celebrates outstanding results

By Abdale Ali, STEPS Project Manager, ELBA’s Employment team

Just four weeks ago, 50 east London residents walked through ELBA’s and corporate supporter SEGRO’s doors facing unemployment barriers. Now, they leave equipped with transformational skills and renewed confidence in their career prospects, gained through their participation in the STEPS initiative.

Co-designed by SEGRO and ELBA, STEPS is a comprehensive employability programme supporting east London residents. Part of SEGRO’s East London Community Investment Plan, STEPS combines intensive skills training with personalised mentoring to create lasting career opportunities.

Programme highlights

Communication transformation: 90% of participants reported significant improvement in communication skills, discovering the power of their own voice through intensive workshops. They learned that effective projection means breathing from the diaphragm and using strategic pauses, transforming from hesitant speakers to confident communicators ready for any professional setting.

Professional revolution: With every participant showing measurable skills development across all seven competencies, the programme delivered remarkable results. Participants experienced profound mindset shifts, learning to see rejection as valuable feedback rather than personal failure, mastered the STAR method for compelling storytelling, and understood how strategic LinkedIn networking drives career success in today’s competitive market.

What participants say

“I have been building confidence on how to project my voice. Using effective techniques to remain calm and reduce nerves”

“I learnt that mistakes are okay to make and rejections can be used as a learning process instead of being disheartened by them”

“I have learned what I need to improve on for interviews, using the STAR technique. Specific examples to support my skills”

Looking Forward

These outstanding results reinforce our commitment to breaking down employment barriers across east London. The STEPS-SEGRO programme continues to prove that intensive support creates lasting transformation.
