STEM success for ELBA and London City Airport

 In Employment, News

Following a successful event last November, we were thrilled this month when London City Airport and ELBA received a “Highly Commended” award in the category of “Most effective sponsorship of a single event” at the 2017 Corporate Engagement Awards for the STEM in Aviation event held at Excel last November. ‘STEM’ stands for the subjects Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. ELBA staff worked closely with London City Airport staff to organise and deliver the interactive event to 11 schools from across 7 boroughs 110 students in total. The day consisted of STEM themed challenges and informative presentations from STEM industry professionals who engaged students and demonstrated how STEM subjects they study in school are integral to the aviation industry.

The STEM themed activities on the day were designed and facilitated by City Airport and ELBA Staff with ELBA building on their 20 years experience in engaging communities in East London to reach out to 11 schools across 7 boroughs. In the run up to the event it was important to ensure that schools were communicated with effectively in term of logistics of the day and input in to exercises and materials. ELBA’s education team used existing relationships with schools and developed new relationships increasing ELBA’s presence in boroughs like Barking & Dagenham, Redbridge, Havering and Greenwhich.  Next year we expect to increase the number of schools and participants.

London City Airport and ELBA were shortlisted in their category alongside:

  • Macmillan Cancer Support and Marks & Spencer
  • Duracell, the Great Run Series and Hill+Knowlton Strategies
  • BNY Mellon, the Boat Races Company, Cancer Research UK and M&C Saatchi

Fabienne Gress, CSR Executive at City Airport, who attended the Corporate Engagement Awards said:

“Given the high profile of the other partnerships I am very proud of the work that the airport and ELBA completed in the pilot last year and we look forward to running a bigger and better event this year.”

ELBA will be working with London City Airport again this year to deliver a STEM themed event for even more schools in east London. If you are company, school or potential volunteer interested in being part of this year’s event please contact Reg Amoah reg.amaoah@elba-1.org.uk for more information.
