Looking at the impact of Rise Up East

Liz Magill, Community Development Project Manager – Connect

Rise Up East is a consortium that is part of the My Ends programme, which is funded by the London Violence Reduction Unit with the aim of reducing youth violence among young people across London. The My Ends programme was established to offer support, resources, and financial assistance for locally tailored interventions in neighbourhoods that experience high and persistent levels of violence. The Rise Up East partnership specifically targets the areas of Hackney Wick, Homerton, and Marsh Hill in East London and consists of The Wickers Charity, Hackney Quest, Immediate Theatre, The Crib, Change in Youth, and ELBA.

Over the past three years, Rise Up East has successfully brought together key community organisations in Hackney to enhance support for the community, with a particular emphasis on vulnerable youth. During this period, Rise Up East has awarded 14 community grants to grassroots organisations dedicated to supporting young people at risk. These organisations have engaged young people through various activities including music, sports, and film. Kianu Glasgow, Rise Up East Programme Manager described it as, “Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much.”

A significant outcome of Rise Up East is the establishment of Hackney Rep, a voluntary consortium comprising 13 community organisations working collaboratively to prevent school exclusions and enhance educational experiences. In Hackney, young people face a 65% higher risk of school exclusion compared to the London average. As My Ends 1.0 nears its conclusion, members of Rise Up East are exploring strategies to continue supporting the young people they have been working with over the past three years. Violence remains a pressing issue in the Hackney community, and a future challenge will involve securing sustainable funding to address youth and knife violence in London effectively.
