Learning With ELBA
Written by Rachel Bell, Deputy Head of Programmes – Education
February has been a very exciting month for the Education Team, namely due to an overseas learning trip from Japan! ASKNET, a Japanese Career Education non-profit, travelled to London for a week of learning which included activities organised by ELBA. The aim was to introduce ASKNET to the various UK careers education initiatives that support young people’s decision making, and national framework, including the Gatsby Benchmarks. Overall, the delegation aimed to learn from the UK best practice, and hopefully develop policy recommendations for the reform of the educational framework in Japan.
As part of this trip, they were keen to experience a Career Insight Visit in action, demonstrating how business volunteers support the employability skill development of east London students. MUFG kindly hosted a group of 30 Year 9 students from Kingsford Community School for an employability workshop. The session included career journeys from volunteers, an office tour and a fun sustainability challenge which had students working in groups and creating presentations. Thank you Kingsford students for being so engaged, and the MUFG volunteers for giving up their time!
To continue the learning, MUFG then held a ‘roundtable’ discussion for ELBA, MUFG and ASKNET. ASKNET gave an overview of the current education landscape in Japan, with MUFG showcasing their continued efforts to champion for social mobility including how they source early talent. The discussion was extremely interesting, with all participants learning something new and gaining a new perspective. Thank you MUFG for your hospitality and hosting the discussion.
To our new friends at ASKNET, we sincerely hope your visit was fruitful and that you gained an insight to the career education landscape in the UK. Kazuo Yamamoto, the Representative Director at ASKNET stated:
“We would like to show our deepest gratitude to the ELBA for arranging such wonderful visits for us. The purpose of our visit was to learn from England’s frameworks for career education and related systems; discussion with schoolteachers and experiencing first-hand the ELBA’s programme made our visit a truly insightful one.”
It was a pleasure to meet you all and hopefully we cross paths again in the future! Sayōnara for now!
