Construct Yourself
Written by Chantell Brown, Head of Programmes – Employment team
In collaboration with Canary Wharf Contractors, Workpath and EET training provider, ELBA recently launched “Construct Yourself’ – an employment and skills construction programme.
Over 35 years ago when ELBA was first established, Canary Wharf was the heart of its work – a response to the major development work going on in this previously residential area. Now, with the continued development in and around Canary Wharf, launching the new ‘Construct Yourself’ programme was a natural step.
As part of the programme, 6 residents of Tower Hamlets were given 2 weeks employability skills training where they were equipped with all the necessary tools to enter the world of work, followed by free CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) training.
Five trainees successfully completed the training and received their CSCS card, which provides proof that they have the appropriate training and qualifications to work on a construction site.
Six employee volunteers from Canary Wharf Contractors came forward to plan and carry out an insightful visit of ongoing development projects in Canary Wharf.
As a group, the trainees heard first-hand the experiences of trade staff and witnessed the stages of the groundworks of a construction project, through to a site near completion.
Contractors ESG, Munnellys and O’Halloran & O’Brian welcomed trainees to work on site alongside their qualified, experienced staff in Structural Concrete, Multi Services, Logistics and Mechanical and Electrical works.
After two weeks of on-the-job work experience, trainees were offered interviews for permanent jobs. Two have now received job offers and look forward to careers within the construction industry.
ELBA and Canary Wharf Contractors look forward to delivering further Construct Yourself programmes, contributing to changing individuals’ lives.
