Inspirational Women – Charlotte Robinson, Headteacher at Rokeby School

 In News

How did you get to where you are today?
Lots of hard work! I went to university to be a teacher and then went on to teach in East London. I’ve been working in a variety of schools. I’ve mostly worked in Tower Hamlets, Newham, and in Enfield. I’ve been a headteacher for 11 years of Rokeby boy’s school.

What barriers do women face in particular along the career path you’ve chosen?
I think there are fewer barriers now than there used to be. If you’re determined to do it – you should go out and do it and believe in yourself. It is useful to have mentors and role models along the way to see what is achievable, and use their guidance when you need it. The only thing I would say – it is less of a barrier now so much – along the way I’ve had three children, and each time I’ve taken a small amount of maternity leave. I personally felt it was important to get back into work quickly, if I wanted to progress to the role of headteacher at the time. I think that has changed significantly now over the course of the last 20 years, as the workplace has changed.

How/have you been able to challenge these barriers?
For me, it was important to have a supportive partner. He stayed at home to take care of our daughter and took time off work to look after her to make sure I could pursue the career that I wanted. I think it is important having a framework around you who support and believe you can do that job to change what are the stereotypical role of men and women. For me, it meant for my partner to do more childcare and for me to follow my career path.

What does Women’s Day mean to you and why is it important?
I think it’s important to celebrate the achievements and different achievements women have made. It doesn’t have to be academia, education, big business, just have to be something that you enjoy and where you can see that you do your best. For some women it means becoming a mother and staying home and looking after the children. For me, in the workplace it means being the best that you can in your position.

International Women’s Day allows us to celebrate the different achievements that women have – whatever they are.
