Bringing Joy and Connection: Social Hubs in Islington

Bringing joy and connection: Social hubs in Islington

Written by Marija Mikne, Community Project Manager, The BIG Alliance

In August, BIG Alliance partnered with MUFG and their Facilities Team to offer a heartwarming Social Hub experience for Claremont Project’s service users. Claremont Project runs programmes for people aged 55 and over, aimed at being creative and healthy in body and mind, and at helping to develop real and lasting friendships.

The aim of the Social Hubs is to combat the issue of social isolation, namely among elder people – a challenge that affects many, not only in Islington but across the UK. According to Age UK, over 2 million elder people in England live alone and often go for over a month without speaking to a friend, neighbour, or family member. These statistics paint a stark picture of the loneliness that many seniors face in their daily lives.

Attendees of the session, hosted at MUFG offices, broke the ice and warmed up to each other over some lunch. Soon enough though, a competitive element was added to the afternoon over a few rounds of bingo – a classic game that never fails to add excitement to the mix. But it wasn’t all about the numbers or the competition; it was about the bonds formed during the game as laughter filled the room as MUFG volunteers and the senior beneficiaries tried their luck.

The whole event was an opportunity for people to meet someone from a different generation and create a bond while sharing stories about their lives, memories and hobbies.

“It was a really enjoyable event which not only brought together the guests we invited, but also our team. It was great to see everyone interacting and socialising. I had just as much fun as the guests!”

– said Laura-Ann Whitt, a volunteer coordinator of the activity.

The August Social Hub in Islington was a small step towards addressing the significant issue of social isolation among the elderly. It’s a reminder that a little bit of time, care, and human connection can make a world of difference in the lives of our older community members.

“All the volunteers were incredibly friendly and helpful, and we had a good laugh playing Bingo.”

– said Claremont Project’s service users of the event.

BIG Alliance and MUFG are committed to running more Social Hubs for Islington’s residents who are experiencing isolation. Together, we can make Islington a place where no one feels alone.
