Black History Month – What has the education team been up to?
Written by Rosa High, Project Manager – Education Works
October is the month to promote knowledge and understanding of Black History and culture, both nationally and within our local communities. Therefore, the education team at ELBA is committed to working with its fantastic business partners to create educational opportunities to enable students to gain a broader understanding of Black histories and consider the experience of black professionals.
On the 13th of October, Sarah Bonnell Girls School welcomed six volunteers into their school to host a career carousel. Our six volunteers delivered talks with three different groups of students about their career journey, education history and career aspirations. The talks had an emphasis on the experience of Black and Ethnic Minority professionals and gave students an insight into what this can look like. The talks were a great success with gleaming feedback from the students as they learnt about what a successful career can look like and were inspired to begin thinking about their own future careers.
On October 27th, law firm and ELBA supporter, Orrick, will be hosting a panel discussion with higher education students who are interested in pursuing a career within law. This will give an insight into law and Orrick as well as their Black Ancestry Affinity Group. Topics will include, amongst others, details about their day-to-day life, their history in both education and employment and reasons for joining Orrick. Those attending will also be given tips on starting out their careers and advice on personal development. The session will conclude with general recruitment tips and opportunities to work at Orrick, as well as an opportunity for students to ask questions throughout the hour. The session will be run with the focus of race and equality and we anticipate that this will be an incredibly valuable workshop for the students to take part in.
A massive thank you to our business partners and their commitment to honouring such a meaningful campaign.
