Volunteer profile – Mirusaine Ramarajaha, Portfolio and Asset Management Analyst, MUFG

Mirusaine Ramarajaha, Portfolio and Asset Management Analyst at MUFG tells us about how the sort of support she’s now offering young people has helped her to get to where she is today, and why she wants to pay that forward.

Why do you volunteer?
I’ve personally benefitted from the goodwill of others (e.g. being mentored) and it’s helped to guide me through my education. Without this, I don’t think I’d be doing what I am now and so I have always wanted to pay it forward to others.

What have you gained from your volunteering experience?
Mentoring a year 10 student through the BIG Alliance Mentoring Works scheme was an incredibly enriching experience. I went into the process hoping to leave a positive impact and help my mentee as much as I can and I left feeling like I did this, but also having learnt so much about myself – about the way that I communicate and the power I have as a role model to inspire and guide others. Seeing my mentee grow in confidence and hearing how they enjoyed our sessions was really rewarding.

Would you recommend volunteering to a colleague and, if so, why?
Definitely! Whether that’s through mentoring or another scheme, there is always some way or another you can volunteer and leave a positive impact on others using the skills you already have. It helps you remain humble, challenges you to learn and grow, and can be a really fulfilling experience.
