Staff Spotlight- Samie John, Project Manager EquiBalance

When did you join ELBA / BIG Alliance?
January 2024.

What is your role and what does it involve?
I am a Project Manager within the Employment team. I manage the EquiBalance project, which is a collaboration between ELBA and Barings. EquiBalance is designed to equip black and ethnically minoritised students aged 16-18 with the knowledge, skills and experience required to achieve their ambitions through a series of workshops, mentorships and enriching work placements. I work closely with the funder and help ensure candidates access the opportunities this project offers.

Three words to describe yourself
Resilient, dedicated and innovative.

Tell us one thing that people may not know about you
This year has been a true journey of self-discovery. I feel as if I have arrived at the starting point of my purpose. In this self-discovery, I found that I actually enjoy exploring social spaces alone – whether it is visiting a museum or just finding new spots. While some may say I am extrovert (which I am not), I’ve come to realise that solitude in certain settings is where I feel …. Samie.

Tell us the best thing about working for ELBA
The profound connection to an organisation that has stood as a beacon of hope within the east London community for many years. It’s nothing short of inspiring to witness and participate in its vital mission of uplifting lives, weaving together the threads of social mobility, and building bridges that unite the corporate world with the heart of our community. There is an unmatched sense of fulfilment in contributing to transformative initiatives that ignite genuine opportunities, empower individuals to reach their dreams, and cultivate powerful partnerships that spark meaningful change. In this collaborative, purpose-driven environment, every effort resonates deeply; we don’t just work together — we thrive together, nurturing a future where both businesses and communities flourish hand in hand.

Name your favourite place in east London and why
Canary Wharf holds my heart as the gem of east London, a place where history breathes life into an extraordinary metamorphosis. From once a humble dockyard, it has blossomed into a magnificent financial and cultural sanctuary. The modern architecture intertwined with the electric pulse of a thriving business district is nothing short of breathtaking. But it’s the vibrant tapestry of people, cultures and experiences that truly ignites my passion, making every visit a celebration of diversity and life itself.
