Staff Spotlight – Robin Hawthorn, Education Project Manager

When did you join ELBA?
April 2022 after previously working in Fuzhou, China where I was a teacher and an Academic Coordinator for 3.5 years. This experience sparked my interest in education and working with students. This led me to applying for my role here at ELBA as Education Project Manager because it allowed me to continue my career within education, but down a slightly different avenue to before.

What is your role and what does it involve?
I work in the Education team. This means we bring together our corporate and education partners (including secondary schools, colleges and universities) throughout east London. We facilitate events with our partners in a range of ways to develop students’ skill and knowledge, and prepare them for work in their later life.

 Three words to describe yourself
Talkative, sociable and hard-working.

Tell us one thing that people may not know about you
I have never seen a lot of TV shows and films that everyone else has. From SpongeBob to Lord of the Rings, the list goes on… there are many that people talk about watching and I tell them I have never seen it. Which seemingly annoys and surprises many people that I talk to about this.

Tell us the best thing about working for ELBA
The variety of people that I get to work with. Those working here have come from a range of backgrounds with a plethora of life experiences shaping how they are as a person today. My role allows me to help make a big difference to students’ lives within east London through the variety of volunteering opportunities they get to experience from our corporate partners.

Name your favourite place in East London and why
Ninety One Living Room, a jazz club in Shoreditch. It is a really good place to spend an evening with friends and socialise, while drinking and listening to music.

Complete this sentence ‘The absolute best thing about volunteering is…’
…seeing how inspired the students become from the volunteering days. From being able to visit the offices or talking to the volunteers about their career path and life experiences, this all inspires the students to think about their future and motivates them both personally and academically.
