April 2016 Volunteer of the Month
April’s winner is Stuart Bushnell-Wye, Academy Trainer at Barclays. Stuart was nominated for his involvement in the CV Surgery Workshop throughout the academic year with our Education Works team. We run three CV Surgery intakes in the year and Stuart volunteered on every opportunity, having provided valuable feedback to a large number of students. His attitude and mind-set to reviewing the CVs was fantastic and it demonstrates that volunteering from your desk can be just as life changing to someone than being physically present.
Why did you volunteer?
I started participating in the CV Surgery Workshops because it’s just so easy. Signing up is really straightforward, you get sent a CV to review by email & you’ve got two weeks to return your feedback which means that you can plan effectively & fit in your review time when it suits you.
Why do you think volunteering is important?
I remember my experience of job hunting from a few years ago & that’s what motivated me to volunteer & support. I know first-hand that it can become disheartening when you’re not invited for interviews and you can start thinking what am I doing wrong?
Would you recommend volunteering to a colleague and if so why?
I’d recommend volunteering to a colleague because spending just an hour of your time reviewing someone’s CV & providing feedback could lead that person to make the small changes needed to make a big difference to their success in whatever career path they choose to pursue.
