Race Equality Week and why it matters
Written by Tjivejo Pennylope Kapere, Community Development Manager, ELBA
Race Equality Week, 6-12 February, is an annual campaign led by Race Equality Matters. This year, in collaboration with Race Equality Matters, ELBA is embodying the theme, #ItsEveryonesBusiness, because race is everyone’s business.
ELBA staff are encouraged and supported to participate in the 5-day challenge posed by Race Equality Matters, focusing on microaggression, inclusivity and tackling unconscious bias. ELBA believes that – amongst other things – a diverse team encourages creativity, has financial and economic value and – fundamentally – reflects the communities we support.
Race equality, for me, is more than a week. It is a progression of work that has been ongoing since the abolition of slavery and the decolonisation of Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean. Today, ELBA and partners are encouraged to raise awareness of and tackle race inequality within the workplace. Race Equality Week is the movement that allows talent to shine without the barriers of racism.
