The Power of Donated Devices in a Digital World
The Power of Donated Devices in a Digital World
Written by Zakia Sheba, Senior Project Manager
As the world grows increasingly digital, having access to technology is essential for navigating daily life—from job hunting to education and staying connected. Having a reliable device and internet connection can make all the difference. Yet for many individuals, the digital divide remains a daily barrier.
That’s where device donations come in. Through these initiatives, organisations are providing laptops, tablets, smartphones to those who need them most. The impact is both immediate and transformative.
Since June 2024, ELBA has distributed up to 900 devices to local community organisations, thanks to the generous support of our corporate partners. These devices have reached individuals supported by charities working with refugees, homeless populations, elders, displaced families, and young children.
The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, offering a glimpse into the real-life difference these devices make, a recipient of a donated laptop shared her story:
“When I worked, I never bought a smartphone or a laptop. When I was made redundant, I could no longer afford to buy these things. Now I am job seeking and I have to apply for jobs on a regular basis. Because I do not have internet access at home, I have to rely on public libraries. Sometimes there are no computers available or the system is down. This means I can’t job search that day. Now that I have received a laptop and a Getbox, I will be able to job search every day—regardless of whether the library computers are working. With my own laptop and internet, I can spend as much time as I need.”
Stories like this are echoed throughout the community. Another beneficiary also noted the transformational effect of donated laptops:
“Having a laptop and internet means I can now access my NHS appointments much easier as more and more services are now going online.”
Device donations are more than just a kind gesture—they are an investment in someone’s future. By sharing surplus technology, we can create a more inclusive society where everyone has the tools they need to succeed.
If your organisation has spare devices to donate, we’d love to hear from you. Please contact us at: community@elba-1.org.uk.
