Mentoring Works: Mid-Year Insights & Impact

Mentoring Works: Mid-Year Insights & Impact

Written by Ajmin Haque, Senior Project Manager – Mentoring Works

Mentoring Works has been empowering east London students since 1996. That’s 28 years of connecting young people with valuable mentors.  The programme focuses on developing key employability skills, specifically the eight essential skills from the Skills Builder Framework, and providing crucial industry insights.

Here’s some feedback from the students currently enrolled on the 2024/25 initiative:

“I appreciate the time and effort my mentor takes out for our sessions as well as helping me achieve my career aspirations through feedback and being attentive in addressing concerns I may have.”

“Mentoring Works is a great programme in supporting any aspects of student life that worry you. The communication from the team is perfect – and the level of expertise is invaluable.”

“Joining this programme has given me exposure to countless new experiences which I never thought I would get.”

“The Mentoring Works programme is a fantastic way to connect with experienced individuals, each with their own unique specialties and industry knowledge as well as an eagerness to share knowledge. I have found it incredibly informative so far, asking questions and gaining insights about skills I need to be employable and having great discussions about managing my current studies.”

Some of the mentors on our programme also shared their experiences:

“I think the programme is a fantastic opportunity for both mentors and mentees to learn and grow.”

“This mentoring programme has been a game-changer—real growth, real connection.”

“An inspiring journey of shared learning and professional upliftment!”

“A space where experience meets enthusiasm—mentoring at its best!”

We have found that direct access to professional guidance and industry knowledge can significantly enhance students’ confidence, broaden their perspectives, and provide them with practical tools for future success. This feedback reinforces the vital role mentoring plays in bridging the gap between education and the professional world, and underscores the programme’s effectiveness in empowering young people.

We are looking forward to celebrating all our mentor and mentees’ achievements in the summer and hope to see the continued blossoming of these valuable relationships.

Takeaway: Inspired by the skills our students are developing? We encourage you to explore the Skills Builder Framework and choose a skill to focus on this week. It’s a great way to continue your own professional growth.
