Mentoring Works – Did it Work?
Mentoring Works – Did it Work?
Written by Maria Tonchievici, Deputy Head of Programmes, Education & Mentoring Works
As we wrapped up another academic year in July, our long-running Mentoring Works programme has once again demonstrated its impact. Established in 1996 and delivered by ELBA and our sister charity, the BIG Alliance, the programme partners with secondary schools and colleges across Hackney, Haringey, and Islington to support young people. This year, 196 dedicated mentors from 13 corporate partners helped 234 students in Year 10 and Sixth Form/Post-16 develop key life skills and competencies.
Across east London and Islington, 19 educational institutions were engaged in the programme, and the results speak for themselves.

Our students shared inspiring stories of personal growth:
“I have significantly improved my oracy, transforming from a timid speaker into a confident presenter.”
“I improved my interview skills and secured an interview for the position of senior student.”
“My mentor helped me find, apply, and get accepted into a work experience programme.”
Students also praised the personal support and insights they received from their mentors:
“My mentor was very supportive and insightful, helping me understand any ideas I struggled with.”

“Both my mentees were successful in applying for university experiences and have clear aspirations for further study.”
School and Company Coordinator Feedback
School coordinators highlighted the transformative nature of the programme:
“This programme is outstanding. Meeting professionals in the workplace is priceless as it raises students’ ambitions and motivates them.”
Company coordinators emphasised the value of connecting young people to the corporate world:
“It helped young people explore careers and discover their potential, while mentors had to innovate in their approach to connecting with the students.”
A heartfelt thank you to all our students, mentors, and partners for their dedication. As we gear up for the 2024-25 academic year, we look forward to another year of growth and success. HERE WE GO AGAIN!
