Volunteer profile – Hannah Vandi, Relationship Support Manager at HSBC
Hannah Vandi is Relationship Support Manager at HSBC. Hannah has volunteered in several ELBA workshops as well as completing the ENABLE Communication Coach programme. Hannah says that in giving back to the community, the volunteer learns a lot, and here she talks about the skills she has gained via her experiences working on ELBA’s programmes.
Why do you volunteer?
I volunteer because I wanted to give back to the community – you learn a lot about others, their background, and sharing my journey always gives hope. ELBA is a great place to volunteer as they have a variety of volunteering opportunities for everyone from one hour to half-a-day. To date, I have volunteered in workshops and completed the ENABLE Communication Coach.
What have you gained from your volunteering experience?
In completing the ENABLE Communication Coach programme my listening skills have improved. And, organising the dates at the end of the sessions and planning for the next session based on the need of the Coachee. I have also learned to be flexible as the plan can change and discussion leads to something else. This is made possible as ELBA empowered us to lead the programme, giving us tools as a guide and ensuring that the Coachee and myself both take the lead.
My presentation skills have also improved. Working with ELBA to deliver different workshops – Writing a Cover Letter or Personal Statement; Etiquette for Using Communication – has also enhanced my communication skills. These volunteering sessions have allowed me to meet so many great individuals and given me these practical skills to help me in my day-to-day life.
Would you recommend volunteering to a colleague and, if so, why?
Yes, I would and have recommended to my colleagues. I love the variety and ways you can help. The aspect of Zoom or no Zoom. The preparation time is minimal for the session, and ELBA prepare you beforehand. And feedback is always given, which is good.
