Volunteer profile – Grant Ralph, Digital Office Manager, Société Générale

Grant Ralph, who works as a Digital Office Manager for Société Générale, has been working with ELBA on the Young Influencers Programme (YIP). The Young Influencers Programme is an employability programme designed to increase employment opportunities for under-represented groups in the Financial Services sector. Aimed at 16–18-year-olds, it has consisted of 5 sessions in which students have been exploring how the banking sector makes a positive impact on society alongside a host of enthusiastic Société Générale volunteers. Read on to find out why he decided to volunteer, and what the experience has been like for him.

Why did you decided to volunteer on this specific programme?
I was particularly interested in the format of this programme which had specific project outcomes, but also had elements of supporting these Young Influencers with learning a range of life-, business- and social- skills. I wanted to be part of encouraging the learners in building up their self-confidence by learning new skills.

How have you found the programme so far? What have you enjoyed?
The YIP programme is extremely engaging and very well structured. It provides volunteers with a good balance of support, guidance and clear outcomes for each session. I have particularly enjoyed listening to the learners and understanding the social issues and challenges that have an impact on them and their community.

What do you hope to have achieved by the end of it?
Being a volunteer on this programme has already given me a greater sense of identity and belonging. A real highlight was having 2 learners come to me after the session and shake my hand to thank me for my input and guidance which really made my day. The fact that you can have some small positive influence in a learner’s life is what makes volunteering so worthwhile.

What advice would you give to your colleagues who are thinking about volunteering?
Volunteering provides such a healthy boost to your self-confidence, self-esteem, and sense of belonging. By giving up a small portion of your time and energy you can play an important role in contributing to your community. Becoming a volunteer can give you a greater sense of pride, identity, and natural sense of accomplishment.
