Waseem Akhtar – Brent resident and mentee

Brent resident and Computer Science student Waseem Akhtar tells us about how ELBA is helping him apply his knowledge to the world of work.

Please tell us about yourself to give readers an understanding of your journey
I am a Computer Science student with a strong drive to understand how technology can be used to solve real-world problems. Throughout my studies, I’ve enjoyed learning how systems work and developing my coding skills. However, one of the biggest challenges I’ve faced is bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. While I understood the concepts in class, I often found it difficult to see how they translated into real workplace scenarios.

That’s what led me to ELBA. I wanted to gain a clearer understanding of the professional world, build confidence in applying my skills practically and develop the soft skills needed to succeed – like communication, teamwork and adaptability. ELBA has allowed me to step outside of my academic comfort zone, connect with industry professionals and feel more prepared for future opportunities in tech. It’s given me both insight and confidence to move forward with my career goals.

How did you hear about ELBA?
Through someone I know who was working with Euroclear, a company that partners with ELBA. They spoke highly of the support ELBA provides to young people looking to gain experience and grow professionally, which encouraged me to find out more and get involved.

Please tell us about how ELBA has supported you?
ELBA has supported me in several meaningful ways. From the beginning, the team has been approachable and encouraging, taking the time to understand my goals and help me find the right opportunities. I’ve participated in sessions that focused on employability skills, such as CV building and preparing for interviews, which have helped me feel more confident about entering the workplace.

One of the most valuable things ELBA has offered me is the chance to sign up for a mentor. This has given me the opportunity to receive one-to-one guidance and advice from someone with experience in the industry, which I believe will make a big difference in helping me shape my career path. Overall, ELBA has provided both practical tools and personal support that have helped me grow professionally.

What difference has this support made to you/your challenges?
The support I’ve received from ELBA has made a real difference in helping me tackle the challenges I was facing, especially in bridging the gap between academic knowledge and real-world experience. Before, I felt unsure about how to apply what I was learning in university to a professional environment. ELBA’s guidance, resources and mentoring opportunities have given me clarity, confidence and direction.

Would you recommend ELBA to others and, if so, why?
Yes, I would definitely recommend ELBA to others. They offer a level of support that goes beyond just finding opportunities – they really take the time to understand your goals and help you build the skills and confidence needed to achieve them. Whether it’s through one-to-one mentoring, skills workshops or connecting you with professionals, ELBA creates a space where young people can grow and feel supported in their journey. It’s a great programme for anyone who wants to gain real insight into the working world and prepare for their future with the right guidance.
