Volunteering with ELBA – an insight from FSCS

Name: Terry Mumford

Company: FSCS is the compensation fund of last resort for customers of authorised financial services firms.

Role: Facilities Manager of FSCS.

Describe yourself in five words: Happy, helpful, cautious, thoughtful, trustworthy.

Describe your most recent volunteer experience: I worked with Sarah-Jayne Guerrero, to organise an ELBA team challenge at London Fields to improve the park’s facilities.

Why did you choose to volunteer at London Fields? I was born in Hackney and lived in the area for 24 years, I still miss it. The opportunity to help improve local facilities annually is too good an opportunity to miss. It is a chance to give something back to the community that I grew up in. In all honesty, I really look forward to the London Fields CSR day, I still have friends in the area who applaud the work that volunteers do.

What is the most rewarding aspect for you? The before and after photos, it is great to work hard then reflect on the improvements that our team have made. In addition, the team always talk about how much they enjoy the day out of the office environment with their colleagues, which is thanks to ELBA and the supervision of the London Fields park staff.

Why is volunteering important to you? Volunteering is rewarding. I would hope everyone offers volunteering services during their lifetime; it not only makes you feel good but volunteering results in other people benefiting from the work that you and your team do, a win-win for everyone!

Paul Childs, Head Park Ranger from Hackney Parks, who works with Terry’s team for their annual CSR day at London Fields said:

“Over the years this team has gained proper gardening skills. I’m very impressed with their skills. Compared to when they first came a few years ago, I’m impressed at how they’ve managed to retain their skills. I keep certain tasks just for them because they do such a great job, and their work is always to a green flag standard.”
