Shakera Alam, Universities and Careers Pathways Coordinator, GAIN

Please provide a short outline of your current role and a brief description of any other relevant career experience
I’ve recently started a new role as a Universities & Career Pathways Coordinator at GAIN (Girls Are Investors), where I support programmes that help young women and non-binary students access opportunities in investment management. My role involves working with corporate partners and universities, coordinating programmes and supporting events for students.

Before this, I worked at Fitch Ratings in CSR and DEI through the Eagles programme. I supported a range of global initiatives including charity partnerships, volunteering and mentoring programmes, as well as impact reporting and events.

Tell us about your experience of the Eagles programme
I had a really positive experience with the Eagles programme. It gave me the opportunity to gain proper experience in a corporate environment and develop skills that I still use now. I was able to get involved in lots of different global projects during my time at Fitch, which helped me understand what I enjoyed and what I wanted to do next.

It also helped me grow a lot in confidence. By the end of my placement, I felt much more confident communicating with different people, sharing my ideas and taking ownership of my own work.

What have you gained from the programme?
Definitely confidence and experience. The programme gave me a meaningful opportunity to work in a corporate environment. Being able to learn on the job and take on more responsibility as I progressed was really valuable.

I also gained experience in areas like programme coordination, partnerships, stakeholder engagement and communications, which have all been very useful in helping me move into my current role.

What have you done since you finished the internship/placement
It’s been really nice to move into a role where I can build on a lot of the experience I gained through Eagles, particularly around partnerships, programmes and working on initiatives that have a social impact.

Tell us your top piece of advice for others considering the Eagles programme
Get involved in as much as you can, ask questions and don’t be afraid to put yourself forward for opportunities, even if they feel outside of your comfort zone.
