Ellie Patel, Community Manager, 40 Leadenhall
For International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month, Ellie Patel, Community Manager at 40 Leadenhall, tells us what she is doing to support other women in the industry.
What is your role and what does it involve?
I am the Community Manager at 40 Leadenhall. This means I’m responsible for building a community amongst our tenants and staff through organising events, activating amenity spaces and overseeing communications via our building app. I also lead our Social Value work as a building, which means I’m always looking for ways to support our wider local community through volunteering, donations and events, whether that’s local schools, charities or community groups.
Three words to describe yourself
Organised, Approachable, Active.
How do you mentor or support other women in the workplace?
I am a founding member of the 40 Leadenhall Women in Real Estate Network committee, which we set up to support women working in the field of property management within 40 Leadenhall. As well as hosting regular networking events to provide opportunities for women to meet and connect each other, we have also established a mentoring programme that has paired up 10 women in their early or mid career with a more experienced and inspirational leader to provide guidance and advice on progressing in the industry.
What advice would you give to women entering the industry?
Showing initiative is a fantastic quality so if you have a great idea, don’t be afraid to put yourself out there! It will help to get you noticed and progress quickly.
Which historical or modern-day woman do you admire the most, and why?
I admire Michelle Obama the most because she is a powerful example of modern female leadership. She has an unwavering commitment to public service, education and empowering others, especially young women; and she uses her platform for good whilst remaining authentic and honest.
Tell us one thing that people may not know about you
I am a qualified teacher and worked as a secondary school music teacher for five years before shifting into a career in Events and Community Engagement. Although I no longer teach, I still love singing and playing the piano!
Name your favourite place in east London and why
Probably Hackney as I am a big foodie and there are so many amazing restaurants there! In the summer I love heading to Hackney Wick for some al fresco dining by the canal.
Complete this sentence ‘The absolute best thing about volunteering is…’
…that you really get to see the impact that you’re having, often immediately! You get to meet the people on the ground, hear about the need first-hand and then provide the exact support that is required. It is very rewarding!
